CGI and Visual Effects in Film & TV

Termiten Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Preproduction 2009

Mount St. Helens Production: Interspot Status: In Production 2009

Mount St. Helens is most famous for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, which was the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. The eruption caused a massive debris avalanche, reducing the elevation of the mountain’s summit from 9,677 feet (2,950 m) to 8,365 feet (2,550 m) and replacing it with a mile-wide (1.5 km-wide) horseshoe-shaped crater. The debris avalanche was up to 0.7 cubic miles (2.9 km³) in volume.

Industrial Motion Art will recreate this devasting moment and shows this destructive event in High Definition State of the Art 3D Animations.

City of Steel, City of Life Production: ORF, Linz AG Status: Complete/span> 2009

Linz, the capital of the Province of Upper Austria, serves as European Capital of Culture in 2009. In recent years, Linz has blossomed into a model European city that places its technology- and knowledge-based urban industrial centre at equal footing to its manifold cultural events. Against this dynamic backdrop, Linz has similarly managed to demonstrate respect to nature by including ecological factors on all levels of urban planning. Linz 09 – the city in which industry, culture and nature melt into one.

This film takes the viewer on an adventure trip of a special kind by following the everyday lives of wild animals that have chosen, of all places in the world, Linz as their habitat. It ventures through the Old Town with quiet paws and then takes you by nosedive to the old tower of the cathedral or in agile leaps through the botanical gardens. Linz is presented through an extraordinary angle – whether sniffed out by dogs and cats, seen by falcon or fish or experienced by bumble bees or foxes.

Weinviertel Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Complete 2009

Italy, California and South Africa are not the only places famous fortheir wines. Right in the heart of Europe, Austria can also look back over a past suffused with music and wine, both of which remain inseparably linked to this day.

It is the vastness of Austria’s “Weinviertel” or wine growing region that captivates visitors. No other region of Austria suggests this feeling of endless landscape quite so vividly. A soft, hilly landscape, blessed with a warm climate, that is cultivated by humans but has maintained much of its original character – a quiet landscape with a considerable history and hidden treasures. And the Weinviertel hasn’t been given its name for nothing – wine growing defines the land in all its forms and has always been the distinguishing feature for the inhabitants of this unique region.

Prater Production: mcr film Status: Complete 2008

On the paths and alleys where once the exclusive aristocratic hunting society gathered for light entertainment, today bikers and joggers meet.

In the thicket of the meadows, badgers, foxes and deer are wandering around, while by the waters, Mandarin ducks are mating. They were imported for hunting purposes from China more than a hundred years ago and since then have established their place in the landscape. The Danube’s bayous are not only a paradise for waterfowl of all sorts but also a haven for beavers, who chop down tree after tree.
Life flourishes in the meadows of the Prater, Vienna’s green lung. The 6.000.000 m2 big area of the Prater is full of “animal” surprises and it is exactly here where the 2008 UEFA European Championship will take place.
This film portrays the diverse animal life in and around the stadium and will be available to international partners in time before the opening of the Euro 2008.

Szent Istvan Production: Vidicom TV/Interspot Status: Complete 2008

A camera team aboard the Tegetthoff was sent out to film the first deployment of the new battleship. The planned scenes of celebration would instead become a one of a kind documentation of a horrific event. Their original footage forms the basis of this documentary, which recreates and analyses the tragedy. Historical reenactments, filmed on historic ships in Rostock and Athens, help define the atmosphere of the film.
Using 3D animation and a diving expedition to the wreck of the Szent Istvan off the coast of Croatia, the filmmakers attempt to resolve the last mysteries of the ship’s destruction.

Today the Cradle Mountain National Park allows visitors from all over the world to indulge in this breathtaking landscape.

Timelimits Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Complete 2007

We perceive time in terms of seconds – the length of a heartbeat. We can’t even imagine events that unfold over several days and years or be aware of elementary particles that flash into existence for less than a billionth of a second without high-tech camera equipment and exceptional filming techniques.

“Time Limits” uses a combination of dramatic computer animation, amazing real time images and the latest scientific advances to give a totally new view of our world and our universe. Specially developed motion-control time-lapse photography will bring to life the slow motion world of plants and the beautiful play of day and night. As the journey continues we experience shorter timescales to find elements that exist for less than a millionth of a second diving into a world of its own. Experience events in a completely new visual way and join the team that made “Limits of Perception” such a success on a fascinating journey to the limits of time.

Mariazell Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Complete 2007

In spring 2007, the basilica of Mariazell has regained its old splendor.

Situated amidst the wildly romantic, mysterious alpine environment of the Ötscher mountain in the border region between the provinces of Styria and Lower Austria, the small village is the destination of numerous pilgrims from far and wide. The film traces the old legends about demons, weather witches and dark forces and portrays the natural environment of this unique mountain world around the pilgrimage site of Mariazell.

Naturetech (Part 1 – 3) Production: MR-Film Status: Complete 2007

Why are blossoms never dirty and can we also make our cars that way?Why can geckos walk on the ceiling and can we use their tricks to create better adhesives?
Why is the spider’s web tougher than steel? Exciting new developments in computer technology, chemistry and physics are now enabling us to understand Nature’s designs better than ever before. Scientists are not simply trying to copy nature – they are taking hints, extracting principles and applying winning designs of evolution in a new, human context.

The Magic of Motion” covers Nature’s winning high speed, long range and all-terrain motion designs such as Germany’s recent tuna-fish sonic jet.
The Material World” deals with the amazing chemistry, physics and statics of natural materials and their transfer to buildings, tools and technical appliances of the future.
Energy is the Key” focuses on Nature’s energy production and conservation methods and speculates on future solutions to one of the most pressing problems of today’s humanity.

Kamptal Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Complete 2006

Far from being a long, let alone a wide river, the waters of the Kamp river feed one of the most fascinating valley landscapes of Lower Austria.

From its source to its estuary, which empties into the Danube, the river descends about 745 metres in altitude. A river course like the Kamp’s is a life corridor whose banks line increasingly rare wetlands, marshes, meadows, gallery forests, embankments, jungle-type shrubs and alluvial forests. While small sections of the river course were made a nature preserve, one whole section of the river was designated to become a “cultural park“. The region is shaped by its long-standing cultural tradition, the perfect soil for wine-growing, and an ever more strongly positioned gentle tourism industry.

Im Herzen der Zeit Production: Laufbildgesellschaft Status: Complete 2005

Our lives are ruled by an insubstantial phenomenon that we all accept, we all believe in. – All of us. Some of us more than others – that’s how TIME works.

Thousands of years ago we invented calendars and clocks that followed the movements of the stars. And we believed that we understood TIME. But just because we can measure TIME, it doesn’t mean we understand it.

Poisoned! Production: AV-Dokumenta Status: Complete 2004

This film takes a look at the various ways poisons have been used throughout history, using dramatic reconstructions of some of the most infamous poisonings.

But the film doesn’t stop there. Using advanced computer animation, we travel inside the bodies of a victim of the Borgias, as well as Cleopatra, Hannibal, Socrates, Emperor Leopold and a host of other unfortunate victims, to witness from the inside how they died. The film follows humanity’s macabre search over thousands of years for the perfect poison. A poisoner needs a poison that is tasteless and colorless, and therefore won’t be noticed by the victim. It needs to work in low doses, so a poisoner doesn’t have to feed his victim large quantities. And it needs to be reliably and quickly lethal. Finally, it needs to be indetectable after the event, so the poisoner leaves no trail of guilt. In fact, for preference it should mimic the symptoms of a disease, so none even suspects poisoning. Not surprisingly, such a perfect poison is not easy to find or make, and the search has occupied some of humanity’s finest minds.
